Article on 19th Avenue Park neighborhood published on “CA-Modern Magazine”
CA-Modern Magazine (www.eichlernetwork.com) has published a great article on our neighborhood -
![]()
From the pages of CA-Modern magazine, By Dave Weinstein
Nineteenth Avenue Park -- building community
in a hidden Eichler enclave of urban San Mateo
By all accounts, the quiet Eichler enclave of Nineteenth Avenue Park has been a marvelous place to live since folks first arrived 55 years ago."It was awesome," says Sharon Tallman, who grew up in the San Mateo neighborhood from age two, briefly left, but returned to raise three children there herself.
She remembers neighborhood baseball games and talent shows, with parents hauling pianos into their driveways to better entertain the community. "We had barbecues outside for no reason," says Rita Balliet, an original owner and Sharon's lifelong friend.
The above is just the introduction – the full article can be found here:
http://www.eichlernetwork.com/nbrhd_19thavenue.html
Check it out - you’ll see pictures and read stories about some folks you may know!

New home for the Peninsula Humane Society to open in the first quarter of 2011
Ken White, a 19th Ave Park resident and President of the Peninsula Humane Society, was kind enough to speak at our last meeting on 9/10.
![]()
Ken brought over a friend, Alex, an Australian blue-tongued lizard
Among other things, Ken mentioned that the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) is moving. The “Tom & Annette Lantos Center For Compassion”, 1450 Rollins Road (Burlingame), is anticipated to open first quarter 2011, as the new home for the charitable programs of the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.
On a personal note, Janelle and I adopted a dog from the PHS in 2001. Scuba (seen above) was a pit bull/lab mix – he passed away last February and was one of the sweetest dogs we ever had.
The PHS saves over 7,000 animals a year – you can help by adopting an animal (through the end of October, adopt two kittens for one adoption fee!). You can also help by making a donation or by simply volunteering some of your time and walking a dog – for more details see http://www.peninsulahumanesociety.org/.
I copy below some of the renderings of the new facility Ken White made available to 19thavepark.com.

Give your opinion on the louder Caltrain horns: call 650-508-6200
Update 8/2/2009: Gordon S. tells us the callers have won! Check out this article:
Caltrain horns to return to normal volume level
http://www.insidebayarea.com/search/ci_12967150
Ater nearly two weeks of reaching for earplugs and headache pills, residents and businesses along the Caltrain tracks can rejoice: The volume of the train horns will soon return to normal...
I’m leaving the info below – just in case we don’t see results from CalTrain in the next few weeks.
Original 8/1/2009: If you would like to voice your opinion on the louder Caltrain horns call this number:
650-508-6200
and ask for customer service. Cheryl Hylton reports that she talked to a nice woman who is keeping track and count of the calls.
For more information on the louder Caltrain horns, watch the video above and check out this article published in the San Mateo County Times.

San Mateo Flood Assessment Correction Team - FACT
A group of our neighbors has been working to assure that ALL San Mateo property owners will no longer be face with the costs of being in a FEMA Flood. The group calls themselves San Mateo FACT [Flood Awareness Correction Team] – here’s a video published by FACT:
FACT’s immediate goal is to make sure the Assessment District Vote is YES. For more information on “San Mateo Flood Assessment Correction Team” (FACT), click here.

Vote YES on ‘City of San Mateo South Bayfront Levee & Flood Control Facilities Assessment District’
We have an opportunity to upgrade the San Mateo levees which will eliminate, for those who live in Zone A, the ever increasing cost of flood insurance and get FEMA out of our lives by the end of 2010. The levee upgrades plus additional effort, as described below will be needed to completely remove Zone B residents from FEMA’s Special Flood Hazard Area.
FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area Map
19th Ave. Park Detail – click on image for larger map
Around May 1 you will receive in your mail a ballot regarding an assessment district to pay for fixing the levees as required by FEMA to eliminate the Bay Flooding Risk. The district’s name will be the “City of San Mateo South Bayfront Levee & Flood Control Facilities Assessment District”.
Please vote YES. If a majority of US vote yes we will rid ourselves of the requirement to pay flood insurance by raising the money we need to improve our levees to FEMA's requirements.
See below for more details.
